Disappointment as we field a strong side but still get beaten by Stotherts & Pitt 3-1. All 3 goals conceeded were weak affairs with the first being a gentle shot after 10 minutes that slipped through Matthew Lapham’s hands and legs to roll gently into the net. The 2nd followed quickly on 20 minutes but was at least 3 yards offside (our linesman wasn’t watching – Doh!). A couple of good chances for Williams & Tabiner were saved by the Stotherts keeper but we failed to apply an consistent pressure until our latest new signing, Barry Gibb, moved into centre of midfield after 70 minutes. From that point on it was one way traffic as we finally linked up the play between midfield and attack, forcing Stotherts further back into their own half. In the 75th minute the Stotherts keeper makes an excellent save from a Willcox weaving run and shot that left 3 Stothert defenders on the ground. But then the sucker punch, we get caught on the break and as the ball is played into the box Lindsay calls the line, Lapham & Weeks hesistate and the Stotherts striker nips in to prod into an unguarded net after 85 minutes. 3-0. Willcox grabs us a late consolation goal, his 100th league goal for the club, with a Zoalesque heel flick from a Tabiner cross in the 86th minute but the game is over as a contest. On reflection, there were only 3 players in the side that played regularly last season and the unfamiliarity across the team was clear to see. So, with the players we now have available things should improve as we play more games….we hope!

Against a strong Saltford side our “new” side struggled to come up with the level of organisation we had achieved in the previous game. A first minute goal to Saltford put us 1-0 down and we never really recovered, battling hard but not creating anything and only forcing 1 save from the Saltford keeper during the whole 90 minutes. On the positive side, we restricted last seasons unbeaten Division 3 champions to a few chances and there is clealy as good spirit in the team and some good young players. But, it looks like it will take a few weeks to establish the levels of understanding, movement and organisation we’ll need if we want to do well.
03 Sep 05
On a scorchingly hot day our “new” side featuring 7 club debutants puts in a determined and organised 1st outing, securing a hard fought 2-1 win over Chew Valley Seniors. 16 year old Dave Griffin created the first goal when his fierce 30th minute shot was parried by the Chew goalkeeper. Jason Willcox pounced on the rebound sending a low drive into the corner of the Chew goal. 1-0. Some excellent saves from Matthew Lapham kept us ahead as Chew pushed forward. Chews’ attempts on goal were beggining to dry up when Gerry Weeks handled in the area to give Chew the penalty from which they duly scored a 65th minute equaliser. 1-1. The Chew goal managed to bring us out of our shell and we began to push forward with more conviction with Carl Newton and Pete Davies controlling the midfield. As the game began to draw to a close Sam Tabiner finally despatched the winner our chances deserved in the 85th minute. 2-1.
24 Aug 05
Another difficult game as we once again struggle to put out a full side. We manage to scrape 11 players together (inclduing some walking wounded) and have a good close contest with AFC Bath Rangers. In a game of many chances for both teams Willcox, Alex White and Dave Griffin either miss good chances or see their goal bound shots saved and we are kept in the game by a number of excellent saves from Matthew Lapham before Bath Rangers finally get an opening goal in the 75th minute. A great reaction from the team though as we pile forward in the last 15 minutes creating a host of further chances before the Bath Rangers keeper spills a strong but straight Tabiner shot into the net for the 85th minute equaliser. We continue to dominate the closing exchanges before Dave Griffin is put through by Tabiner and he cooly drives his left foot shot under the Rangers keeper and into the corner of the net for a 90 minute winner. A 2-1 victory is deserved but we couldn’t have complained if we had drawn. However, excellent performances from Matt Lapham and Matt Williams andf Dave Griffins first goal for the club gives some hope that the enforced “youth policy” will come good this season.
24 Aug 05
Proposed friendly against Seend United is cancelled as we are unable tpo raise a strong enough side.
20 Aug 05
A difficult 1st friendly against Oldfield Park as we cobble together a scratch side including three 16 year olds (who all did well). An initial gulf in class is apparent in the 1st half as Matt makes a number of excellent saves before we start to edge our way into the game creating a number of half chances before we change ends at 0-0. A goal for Oldfield straight after half time knocks our resolve and Oldfield go on to dominate for the rest of the second half running in 4 further goals to take the game 5-0.
18 Aug 05 Opening league fixtures are announced and a tough start for C.S. Filos with away games against league newcomers Chew Valley, Division 3 champions Saltford AFC and experienced Division 2 side Stothert & Pitt.

All change as the club reluctanctly resign from the Trowbridge League and Paul Bryant resigns as club secretary. The large number of drop outs confirmed for next season mean that we can only realistically put a side out if the traveling is reduced. So, an applocation to rejoin(!) the Bath & District League will be made during the next few days. Hope we are accepted back….

02 Jun 05
Shocking news as 8 players announce that they will not be playing next season. Departures include, Barker, Martin, Cooper (travelling), White, Kingwell, Vowles (Retired), Bayliss (does want to travel), Bliss (playing Sundays). A further4 players are only “maybes” (Walter, Brimble, Lawrence, McGonigle) take the potential losses to 12. So, a lot of phone calls to be made this summer to attract new players!

08 May 05
A sloppy end to a great season as most of the team decide to swap positions and generally have a laugh. The result a 6-2 thumping from a decent but not good Hilpterton side. It is fair to say that the result, win lose or draw, had no bearing on our final position but it was disappointing to finish such a good season with such an embarrasing result.

Wiltshire Times & Bath Chronicle feature our win in the Taylor Kitchens Cup Final. Click to download full article.
03 May 2005
A fantastic end to our first season in the Trowbridge & District league as we win the Taylor Kitchens & Bedrooms Cup by 2 goals to 1. Very much a tale of 2 halves as we put in an abject, nerve ridden, 1st half performance and get completely dominated by a keenly motivated Westbury United “A”. A number of good saves from stand-in keeper Dave Hall keeps us in the game as we finish the half fortunate to be on level terms. A “drains up” at half time galvanises us and we start the 2nd half much the better side putting Westbury under increasing pressure until a thunderous shot from Bliss scorches into the corner of the net from 20 yards to break the deadlock. The pressure and nerves visibly lift as we follow the goal with a superb spell with Willcox hitting the bar from 30 yards and Vowles seeing his fine run and shot saved by the Westbury keeper. In the 86th minute a fine move from Willcox & Vowles is cleared by an increasingly desperate Westbury defence and the resultant corner is slammed into the net with a fabulously timed volley from player manager Davies. Westbury gain a penalty in the last minute to bring the score back to 2-1 but the game is won and we lift out first trophy in the Trowbridge league. Marvellous.
30 Apr 2005
Our best performance of the season in our penultimate league game as we win the promotion decider against The Deverills by an astonishing 6-1. A poor start is compounded with an early goal for The Deverills but this only serves to stoke up a whirlwind response as Willcox fires home 3 goals in 15 minutes to put us 3-1 up. Cracking goals from Penkethmen (2) and Barker underline an emphatic performance. Let’s hope we can replicate this form in 3 days time!
24 Apr 2005
Our final home game on Saturday 30th April is moved to Abbey Lane, Freshford as the Sulis Club switches the pitches from football to cricket.
23 Apr 2005
Congratulations to Blue Circle for winning the 2nd Division Championship. Circle take the title by scoring 2 goals in the last 8 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory against Castle Combe Reserves. If only we hadn’t let in those last second goals. If only we had scored a few more. If only we were better!
23 Apr 2005
Jimmy Vowles and Jason Willcox turn out for sister club Filos F.C. against The Cutters Friday “A” but despite Vowles putting Willcox through to score twice, the game is lost 3-2.
21 Apr 2005
Our next game vs Hilperton is postponed to 7th May due to lack of players.
16 Apr 2005
After a few games on the road we finally get back to the Sulis Club to play mid table Bratton. The wide flat pitch and benign conditions help contribute to a much better performance (despite the views of some). White and Martin squander a couple of good chances in the first half before Bayliss cleverly hooked in a goal just after half time to put us into deserved lead. A fabulous solo goal from Barker doubles the lead in the 75th minute before Bratton briefly rally with a 5 minute spell of pressure that results in a goal from a penalty. As Bratton begin to flag we take control again with White heading in from a Willcox cross in the 88th minute. A decent result and much improved performance. Still too much “moaning” but lets hope we can keep improving and take this form into the cup final!
12 Apr 2005
Any distant hopes we had of winning the league are all but dead following another awful lacklustre performance. 6 games in 16 days is clearly too much for our old bones as once again we fail to string any passing or possession together and drop a couple of defensive clangers that are punished. The result a 3-0 defeat against F.C. Northbridge. Even despite this terrible performance, we still manage to hit the bar twice, have a cast iron penalty turned down, force several excellent saves from the Northbridge keeper and place a host of headers high or wide of the goal. Cows, backsides & banjos come to mind! I guess its time to just concentrate on getting our form and playing style sorted before the cup final. We need to add some creativity to our “combatitive” midfield and get a proper goalkeeper if we are going to improve.
09 Apr 2005
The “title decider” against Blue Circle goes horribly wrong and we meekly submit to a 5-1 drubbing at a very windy cement works. A dreadful performance all round as we fail to put together any sort of possession whilst our trademark watertight defence goes AWOL. The lack of a keeper was a factor but Blue Circle dominated for most of the match without even playing well themselves. A well taken goal from Willcox gave us hope at 3-1 but our championship hopes are now pined on Bratton, Westbury or Castle Combe getting a victory in at least 1 of Blue Circles remaining games. Gutted.
05 Apr 2005
A rather tired and lacklustre performance as we grind out a flattering 3-0 victory against a dangerous F.C. Northbridge. 5 games in 12 days is taking its toll on the older players but goals from Pete Davies, Jason Willcox and Jimmy Vowles in the last 15 minutes of the game set us up for what is likely to be a title decider against Blue Circle on Saturday. Lets hope some of the sharpness has returned in time for the big game.
05 Apr 2005
In a shock announcement Gerry Weeks the 38 year old midfield veteran reverts his decision to retire from competitive football. An emotional Weeks declared “The manager convinced me that I still had a lot to offer the team and after ensuring I was going to start in the next game, I was happy to agree to postpone my retirement”.
04 Apr 2005
Broughton Gifford Reserves resign from the league following a heavy defeat vs Hilperton United. An outcome which favours Blue Circle as their “dropped” point against Gifford is deleted from the records.
02 Apr 2005
Our long awaited clash with league leaders Blue Circle did not disappoint. In a fiercely competitive game where both sides’ desire to win seemed to stunt the quality of the football, we just edge a deserved 1-0 win with a miss-hit shot from Willcox that only just crossed the line. A great late chance for Pete Davies was headed wide and a couple of long distant efforts went close. Blue Circles goal attempts were more limited as, once again, we maintain a watertight defence with McGonigle, Walter, Bryant and especially Kingwell all playing well.
01 Apr 2005
In a shock announcement Gerry Weeks the 38 year old midfield veteran retires from competitive football on hearing that he was to be substitute for the match vs Blue Circle. A disappointed Weeks declared “I am too old to be playing 10 minutes here and 10 minutes there”.
31 Mar 2005
Back to Leighton Rec this time to play Bratton on a Tuesday evening. Another good, competitive game where the returning Martin and Vowles both scored along with Walter in a convincing 3-1 win. One of our better performances and one in which we would have scored a few more if our midfield hadn’t been so reluctanct to provide the final ball to the waiting (and exasperated) strikers. A late injury to Willcox makes him a doubt for the big match against leaders Blue Circle on Saturday.
26 Mar 2005
Another warm and enjoyable afternoons football as we gain revenge for our only league defeat so far with a 1-0 win away to Westbury United “A” at Leighton Rec. Typical to most games in this league, the match was tight and competitive, but once again there were very few chances created as we continue with a 3-5-2 formation that gives us some defensive strength (in light of the long injury list) but limits our forward options. The game was won in the 77th minute as Bliss released Willcox who cut in from the left to unleash a powerful shot which the Westbury keeper could only palm away. Barker was quickest to react and slotted the ball under the recovering keeper and into the net. Some uncharacteristic fumbles from McGonigle gave Westbury hope in the last 10 minutes but the final save was always there to keep the lead intact.
19 Mar 2005
A sweltering Sulis Club witnessed an excellent 1-1 draw between ourselves and 2nd placed Hilperton. Hilperton started the game in a positive fashion and took a deserved lead early in the game, taking complete control for the first 20 minutes with their nos 7 & 8 causing us all sorts of problems. We gradually got back into the game following a switch from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2 with Bliss & Willcox linking up well to carve out an equaliser after half an hour. From that point on it was one way traffic as we piled constant pressure on the Hilperton goal creating many chances (for the first time in weeks). A mix of excellent saves, clearances off the line and misses kept Hilperton in the game as they hung on for the draw. Whilst disappointed not to win, it was a great game only spoilt by some over-zealous refereeing resulting in some ridiculous and unwarranted bookings.

Hiroshi Takamiya is presented with a framed picture of the team following his final game for C.S. Filos before returning to Japan.
12 Mar 2005
After a string of poor results we finally get back to winning ways with a hard fought 2nd leg semi final victory in the Taykor Kitchens Cup against Castle Combe Reserves. We win the away leg by 2 goals to 1 which was enough to take us through following the 2-2 draw in the 1st leg. Whilst the result was deserved in terms of the commitment showed throughout the side, our passing game was not the greatest and we relied on swift and effective counter attacking as Castle Combe put us under severe pressure throughout the game. In fact, Combe will probably be regretting the countless corners and dangerous situations that they either failed to convert or were denied by excellent defending from McGonigle, Bliss, Bryant and Walter. An impressive performance from Cooper and the return of Jim Lawrence were also highlights although Pete Davis joined Weeks, Kingwell, Andy Davis, Turner, Martin, Hulbert and Tiley on the injury list. They say a week is a long time in football – a week after our biggest defeat ever we are celebrating reaching our first Trowbridge and District Cup Final. Its a funny old game!
05 Mar 2005
Our biggest defeat ever as we lose 7-1 in the Fox Leisure Cup to Division 1 leaders Rudloe in driving rain and snow at Leafy Lane. A game that we would have cancelled if we could have (you can’t cancel cup games) as 10 players not available including Andy Davies (broken arm), Ryan Martin (broken rib), Gerry Weeks (mystery decorators injury), Danny Bliss (flu), Chris McGonigle (flu), Paul Bryant (flu), Marc Austin (away), Ali Walter (away), Darren Bayliss (away), Mark Tiley (slipped disc). This ontop of long term injuries to Tony Hulbert (ankle) and James Lawrence (ankle). So we did well to actually field a side but 3 flukey goals in the first 15 minutes and 5-0 at half time put paid to our plan to keep everyone behind the ball and nick a 1-0 win! A much better second half performance as we work several good positions only for the final killer ball or cross to be wasted. Having said that, what other local club would have been able to put out a side with so many drop outs? Hats off to all the “occasional” players would helped us to field a side this week!
26 Feb 2005
Perhaps we should change our name to Keystone Kops F.C! Another, yes another, last minute goal conceeded as we draw 1-1 away to with league leaders The Deverills. A decent performance though as we have most of the posession but again fail to convert our domination into clear cut chances on goal. In fact, a draw was probably a fair result as The Deverills carved out a number of good chances only to be denied by poor finishing and a couple of excellent saves by McGonigle. Match pictures available here.
19 Feb 2005
Another disappointing result as we dominate against a Lamb team who set their stall out to achieve the 0-0 draw that they got. Having said that, despite this domination, we only created a few genuine chances in the game which Willcox and Bliss saw saved by the Lamb’s in form keeper. Unfortunately, the game was ruined to a large extent by The Lamb’s no 10 assault on our centre back Paul Bryant whilst the referee and the other 21 players were at the other end of the pitch contesting a corner. A cowardly and pathetic idiot who then spent the rest of the game giving the ball away as quickly as he could in order to avoid any retribution. What a tw*t!
12 Feb 2005
Semi Final 2ng leg postponed – waterlogged pitch.
05 Feb 2005
We’ve had it coming. Our unbeaten run comes to a shuddering halt with a defeat against a dreadful Trowbridge Wanderers with the very last kick of extra time. Another example of our inability to close a game out at the end. Having said that, we threw the kitchen sink at them, many chances were spurned and the Wanderers keeper was in unbelievable form, but a big improvement is needed if we are going to win anything this season.
29 Jan 2005
A disappointing performance all round as we put in a meek perfromance in the 2-2 draw with Cast Combe Reserves. Despite taking an 2-0 lead though an excellent header from Willcox and a lucky cross, we conceed 2 poor goals in the last 5 minutes to leave it all square for the 2nd leg. Game on! On a brighter note both Blue Circle & The Deverills lost in the league.
22 Jan 2005
Johnny Copper scores his first goal for the club in a 5-2 win against bottom of the table Steeple Ashton. Further goals from White(2), Walter and Andy Davis can’t hide our urgent need for a goalkeeper.
15 Jan 2005
A superb performance for 60-70 minutes of this cup tie. We win 5-3 but lose our shape after the 5th goal and a final 20 minutes of indiscipline take the shine off an otherwise enjoyable game. 2 shocking mistakes from McGonigle & Bryant give Trowbridge a little more than they really desereved in a largley one sided game.
08 Jan 2005
The rust will really be setting in now as our clash with 2nd placed Blue Circle is postponed. That will be 5 barren weeks going into the next game. Any bets on a cup shock next week???
